Creating a Retro Look for your Bathroom
Modern contemporary bathrooms are not for everyone; some homeowners prefer a more nostalgic theme for their bathroom and like to replicate designs from days gone by. Creating a retro bathroom can be fun and offers a wealth of choice from traditional Victorian or vintage to art deco to bold and brash sixties colour.
If it is a retro look you’re after then the same basic design principles apply as space is likely to be the limiting factor. Keep wall colours neutral, create as much storage as you can to prevent clutter and maximise natural light with mirrors.
If you have the luxury of a large bathroom and want to create a vintage look there are many gorgeous products that offer the perfect combination of vintage style with modern functionality. Iconic looks are free standing baths, large console basins on washstands and even a high level WC with chain. Be sure to complete the look with Victorian taps and accessories such as towel rails.
It is possible to recreate the timeless elegance from the Edwardian Art Deco era by selecting traditional products that are designed to be authentic. Pedestal basins with low level WCs and matching bidets are features of the look.
For a cool and funky 60’s retro design think big and bold for both colours and design. Coloured suites were all the rage in the 50/60s, blue, turquoise even green and yellow. Whilst you may not wish to commit to a coloured bathroom suite you can recreate the look by introducing coloured cabinets and furniture. Splashes of colour can also be introduced with a feature wall or bright accessories such as toilet roll holders, soap dishes and towel holders.
Choosing shapes and styles from the sixties is also a good way to get the look; slim basin pedestals and round basins for example.
